[NEWS] Now See Hear!

NewsBrainsForTheDay: INSPIRATIONAL NEWS!

Retraining their other senses could help blind people "see"

Humans can use their hearing to help "see" the world around them just as bats and dolphins do, according to a team Spain's University of Alcala de Henares. Some blind people have taught themselves to navigate by making sounds and listening to how they ricochet off nearby objects, a technique called echolocation.

The scientists have found the best sound to palate click, created by putting the tip of the mouth just behind the teeth and then moving it rapidly backwards. The clicks are similar to the sounds dolphins make. People, though, can only make two or three clicks per second - dolphins can produce hundreds per second.

Lead researcher Juan Antonio Martinez claims some impressive feats: " We have irrefutable evidence that a single nylon thread of only 0.20 millimetres in a diameter can be detected from a distance of more than 10 meters even with fairly heavy-air conditioning noise. The thread is invisible from such distance in normal conditions".

Daniel Kish, a blind American has become so accomplished at echolocation that he has been certified as a guide for other blind people. To see him ride a bicycle, go to: Daniel Kish and Juan Ruiz using and explaining Echolocation.
